Get a general identification card for the first time

Available in-person only

Visit a driver and vehicle office with:

  1. A completed form (copies also available at driver and vehicle offices).

  2. Proof of legal name, date of birth, and acceptable photo identification (birth certificate, passport, etc.)

  3. Proof of residency in Northwest Territories (utility bill, residential lease agreement, etc.)

Your card will arrive by mail within 4 to 6 weeks.

General identification cards are valid for five years, or in the case of foreign nationals who are not permanent residents, the ID card will expire on the date of their work permit.

Fees

  • New card: $51.00
  • Replacement card: $31.00   (seniors 60+: $15.00)
  • Renewal: $51.00 (seniors 60+: $26.00)
