What is this training?

Entry level training (ELT) became mandatory in the NWT as of January 21, 2022. ELT provides people seeking to get a Class 1 driver’s licence (for operating semi-trailers and tractor trailers) with basic driving skills.

ELT includes both classroom and practical work, consisting of an in-class curriculum, in-cab training, and in-yard training. There is 113 hours of training required to complete this course, which consists of 10 modules.  

 

Who needs this training?

You must complete ELT if you’ve:

  • NOT previously held a Class 1 driver’s license that was valid for at least 24 months in the four years preceding the time of application for a Class 1 driver’s license.
  • NOT held a Class 1 more than 24 months in the previous 4 years (after September 30, 2022).
  • NOT held a Class 1 more than 12 months in previous two years (between January 22 - June 30, 2022).
  • NOT completed OR failed 2 attempts at the Class 1 exam by September 30, 2022.

You can transfer your Class 1 Licence if you’ve:

  • Previously held a Class 1 driver’s license that was valid for at least 24 months in the four years preceding the time of application for a Class 1 driver’s license.
  • held a Class 1 more than 24 months in the previous 4 years (after September 30, 2022).
  • Successfully completed the Class 1 exam by September 30, 2022.

 

What will this training cost?

The cost of the training may vary depending on the ELT provider. Please contact NWT ELT providers to find out more about costs for training.

Anyone taking ELT may be able to access funding to help cover the costs associated with training through Education, Culture and Employment, Indigenous governments and Indigenous organizations or employers.
