Transfer a vehicle registration

Available in-person only

Visit a driver and vehicle office with:

  1. Photo identification
  2. Existing vehicle registration
  3. Bill of sale
  4. New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS)
  5. Proof of valid insurance

In the Northwest Territories, licence plates can be transferred to any vehicle you own (fees apply). You may move your existing plate if the existing registration and plate and vehicle are in your name.

If trading in your vehicle for a new vehicle at a dealership, your existing licence plate can be used on your new vehicle for up to 14 days. You must carry your bill of sale document and insurance until you transfer the registration and licence plate.

    Fees

    • Transfer registration (using existing licence plate): $25.00
    • Transfer registration (using new plate): $54.00-$118.00 (seniors 60+: $28.00-$60.00)
