Demerit points and suspensions
Demerit points are recorded on a driver’s record upon the Registrar becoming aware of the offence and will remain for 24 months.
6 demerit points (Class 7 and 5P only)
- The driver’s licence is suspended for a period of 30 days and until a re-instatement fee has been paid. At the end of the suspension, the number of points on the driver’s record is reduced.
- Once the driver has met the 12 month period suspension-free, they are eligible to upgrade their licence to a full Class 5P or 5 licence. This upgrade does not occur automatically and requires a visit to a driver and vehicle office.
8 demerit points
- The driver will be notified by mail. No restrictions are placed on the licence.
12 or more demerit points
- The driver will be notified by mail. The letter will identify the steps necessary to arrange a telephone or personal interview. If the driver fails to attend the interview, the driver’s licence will be suspended until an interview is held.
15 demerit points
- The driver’s licence is suspended for a period of 30 days and until a re-instatement fee has been paid. At the end of the suspension, the number of points on the driver’s record is reduced.
- If the driver accumulates 15 demerit points a second time, the driver’s licence will be suspended for a minimum of 30 days to a maximum period of two years.
How to reduce demerit points
- Demerit points may be reduced once in a two-year period if a driver successfully completes an approved driver improvement course (not offered through the GNWT).
How to appeal the length of a suspension
- Visit a driver and vehicle office to obtain an appeal package and form within 45 days after receiving the notice of suspension.
- Once the package and form are filled out, send to DVlicensing@gov.nt.ca.
